Selective Deafness

Sure, blame it on choice that we do not hear.

“…concentrate on the voices…it just depends on where you’re paying attention…”

Perhaps I’m just super sensitive, because I have been told all my life to listen harder. I think it is propaganda from the audist enterprises that conspire to make hearing people think deaf people can be fixed.

Click the above link, watch the video, and tell me, do you think this is an example of Audism?

Along the same lines, this article “Cure Your Child of Selective Deafness Syndrome” is indicative of prevailing attitudes regarding the idea that people “turn a deaf ear”. This discredits Deaf people and defines our way of being as borderline criminal. Certainly grounds for parental discipline anyway, as this article suggests. Society as a whole seems to have this attitude that it is bad to not hear (listen).

This is the essence of Audism:

The notion that one is superior based on one’s ability to hear or to behave in the manner of one who hears.

Therefore, I will leave you with this video still of Don G of Deafhood Discourses.

  1. There’s nothing wrong with selected deafness, and actually, it can have its uses. For instance, using a technique that I discovered early in our marriage, I managed to “negotiate” the addition of a second dog to our family during a particularly engrossing episode of Match of the Day.
